School History

SEK Los Valles International School is located In the Valley of Cumbayá, a modern and constantly growing parish over an area of six hectares.

In its earlier years, the school was called Colegio Metropolitano and its headquarters opened doors in Quito for 13 years.  In 2015 it joined the International Institution SEK, forming a large family embracing both, the former students of Colegio Metropolitano and the current ones of SEK School.

From the age of three, students are integrally formed at a prestigious institution which ensures mastery of the English language and the learning of the French language.

Despite the excellent infrastructure available to the school, several improvements have been developed to ample its facilities, among which we shall highlight the following:

• On January 15, 2007, the indoor heated swimming pool was inaugurated.
• On July 26, 2009, the construction of stands and bleachers in the football court started. And in August of the same year, it was inaugurated.
• The construction of the Sports Center started in 2010 provided with a structure installation that covers one of the ball courts. Later, in 2015 the complete closure of the open space took place transforming it into our current gym.
• In the year 2013, handrails were placed in different areas of the school to improve security and twelve ramps were installed to provide accessibility for disabled people.
• In the year 2014, a tennis court is built and it brings in place to an additional alternative activity among the curricular and extracurricular offerings.
• In 2022, we inaugurated a MAC Classroom, so as to expand the academic offer in the area of technology.

In the same vein, the educational offer has been through a permanent evolution. Since the second school year under the SEK Institution’s wing (2006-2007), swimming was considered part of the curriculum aware of that this is one of the most complete sports that contributes to body development and strengthens both, health and mind.

In 2010, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) was implemented and it has allowed to prepare the students for college according to the worldwide standards of education.  The awards regarding achieving the diplomas have improved every year, obtaining 100% in the last examinations.

The SEK’s academic offer, among the private educational market, has always been a pioneer in the domains of technology.  Indeed, it began in January 2011, with the deployment of so-called smart slates, which brought into the classrooms of all sections at school an interactive system of multiple applications and services rooted on the benefits of the internet. In addition to this initiative of technological modernity, in September 2013, the use of iPads ventured in pre-school and elementary school to the benefit of all the students. In 2022, we incorporated latest generation iPads.

In the school year 2014-2015 the learning of a Chinese-Mandarin as a third language began to provide the students with a new communication tool, whereas it is one of the most spoken languages in the world. In 2020, we incorporated the French language starting from third grade.

The school is always at the forefront in technology, so that since the school year 2016-2017 students of eighth and ninth grades started using e-books in the aim of facilitating the use of these resources at all levels.

In February 2016, the Ministry of Education assigned to the Metropolitan District Municipality of Quito approved the Project of Curricular Innovation of Foreign Language, to be implemented and applied since the school year 2015-2016 from the initial stage of pre-school of basic education to the third year of high-school.

In 2019, an international education is offered through the PYP Primary Years Program that is one of the International Baccalaureate programs. The PYP focuses on the integral development of the children and their capacity for inquiring and discovering, inside and outside the classroom. In 2021, we started our application for incorporation of the MYP.

In addition, all students keen to do so, can directly access the international programs of the institution, and can participate in exchange programs either cultural or sportive worldwide, as it can be seen on our website.
